the UHD story

CDL has wanted to be able to receive the NASA television feeds since day one.  Problem:  Not carried locally on satellite, cable, or optical networks

Enter Harmonic, a worldwide leader in video delivery infrastructure – Partnered with NASA, they launched NASA TV UHD, the first ever non-commercial consumer ultra-high definition (UHD) channel in North America. The partnership is the result of a Space Act Agreement between Harmonic and the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Using an end-to-end UHD video delivery system from Harmonic, NASA Television has the capability to deliver linear 2160p60 video content, allowing viewers to enjoy footage on a wide range of television and internet-connected devices.

So how did we get our NASA TV?

Bob Maddox,  one of our volunteers offered to donate his C-Band satellite system to the cause.   Dan Jacobs and Bob de-installed the system at home, and moved the assembled dish and mast to InfoAge.

To speed up the process, we purchased a commercial antenna mount from Baird, and installed it the week prior to allow the concrete to set.  A rental auger made short work of drilling the hole for the concrete.

The team located a used Harmonic 7100 receiver that is compatible with the data stream, and proceeded to add the new firmware, and configure it to send the NASA UHF feed over our internal IP (Data) network.
